Why Your AM and PM Routines Should Be Different
One of the most common questions in Korean skincare is: do I need a different routine for morning and night? The answer is yes. Your skin has different needs at different times of day, and using the right products at the right time makes your routine far more effective.
In the morning, your skin needs protection — from UV rays, pollution, and environmental stressors. At night, it’s time for repair and treatment — your skin regenerates while you sleep, so this is when active ingredients work hardest.
The Morning Routine: Protect and Prep
Your AM routine should be lighter and faster. The goal is hydration, protection, and a smooth base for makeup (if you wear it).
- Gentle Cleanser: A splash of water or a mild gel cleanser is enough. You don’t need to double cleanse in the morning since your skin is already clean from the night before.
- Hydrating Toner: A few drops patted into damp skin. This preps your skin to absorb everything that follows.
- Vitamin C Serum (optional): Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects against free radical damage. It’s best used in the morning because it boosts your sunscreen’s effectiveness.
- Lightweight Moisturiser: A gel cream or light emulsion that hydrates without heaviness. Look for hyaluronic acid or aloe-based formulas.
- Sunscreen: The most important step. Korean sunscreens are lightweight, non-greasy, and often have skin benefits built in. Apply generously — about two finger-lengths for your face.
The Night Routine: Repair and Treat
Your PM routine is where the real transformation happens. This is the time for active ingredients, deeper hydration, and skin repair.
- Oil Cleanser: The first step of the double cleanse. Dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and daily grime. Massage for 60 seconds for a thorough clean.
- Water-Based Cleanser: The second cleanse removes any remaining residue. Your face should feel clean but not tight.
- Exfoliating Toner (2–3x/week): AHA or BHA toners promote cell turnover and keep pores clear. On off days, use your hydrating toner.
- Treatment Serum: This is when to apply niacinamide, retinol, or centella asiatica serums. Active ingredients work best overnight when skin is in repair mode.
- Snail Mucin Essence: Snail mucin is ideal for nighttime — it supports skin regeneration and provides deep, lasting hydration.
- Rich Moisturiser or Sleeping Mask: A heavier cream or sleeping pack locks everything in overnight. Your skin does its best repair work between 10pm and 2am.
The Layering Rule
Whether morning or night, always layer products from thinnest to thickest consistency:
- Toner → Essence → Serum → Moisturiser → SPF (AM) or Sleeping Mask (PM)
- Water-based products go before oil-based products.
- Wait 30–60 seconds between layers to let each product absorb.
Products That Work Both AM and PM
- Hydrating toner: Safe and beneficial morning and night.
- Niacinamide: Stable in sunlight, works well in both routines.
- Snail mucin: Gentle enough for twice-daily use.
- Centella serum: Soothing any time of day.
