Getting Started with Korean Skincare
If you’ve been curious about Korean skincare but feel overwhelmed by the famous 10-step routine, take a breath. You don’t need to do all 10 steps from day one. In fact, most Korean women don’t either. The key is building a solid foundation and adding products as your skin adjusts.
Korean skincare is rooted in prevention and hydration rather than covering up problems with makeup. This philosophy has made K-beauty the gold standard for healthy, glowing skin worldwide — and it works beautifully for South African skin too.
The Essential 5-Step Beginner Routine
Start here before expanding your routine. These five steps cover the basics and deliver visible results within weeks:
- Oil Cleanser (PM only): Dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and sebum. Massage onto dry skin, then rinse. This is the first step of the double-cleanse method.
- Water-Based Cleanser: A gentle, low-pH foam or gel cleanser removes remaining impurities without stripping your skin.
- Toner: Korean toners are hydrating, not astringent. Pat a hydrating toner into damp skin to prep for the next layers.
- Moisturiser: Lock everything in. Choose a gel cream for oily skin or a richer cream for dry skin.
- Sunscreen (AM only): Non-negotiable. Korean sunscreens are lightweight and cosmetically elegant — no white cast, no greasy feel.
What to Buy First
Don’t rush out and buy everything at once. Start with a good cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen. After two weeks, add a hydrating toner. Then consider targeted treatments like snail mucin for hydration and repair, or niacinamide for brightening and pore control.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Using too many actives at once: Introduce one new product every 1–2 weeks so you can identify what works and what doesn’t.
- Skipping sunscreen: All those brightening and anti-ageing products are wasted if you don’t protect your skin from UV damage.
- Over-cleansing: If your skin feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too harsh. Switch to a gentle, low-pH formula.
- Ignoring your skin type: A routine for oily skin won’t work on dry skin. Pay attention to how your skin feels throughout the day.
Tips for South African Skin
South Africa’s climate varies hugely from the humid KZN coast to the dry Highveld. In Johannesburg and Pretoria, the dry winters demand extra hydration — layer a hyaluronic acid serum under your moisturiser. In Cape Town’s summer, a lighter routine with gel-based products works best. Durban’s humidity means you can get away with fewer layers but still need SPF.
No matter where you are, sunscreen is essential year-round in SA. Our UV index regularly hits extreme levels, even on overcast days.
